Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
Rio De Janeiro is a beautiful city with Portuguese architecture and modern buildings. It is hidden in many ruins, and most old buildings are not maintained. My experience was that it still creates a great harmony of the old buildings, graffiti arts, joyful people, and modern buildings.
Could it get any better?
Our first stop was to go to our hotel; it was more luxurious than what we were expecting to live at. But worth it as a start after a long month of packing. At the hotel, we were met with a smile at the door by two accommodating hosts, even monkeys, who came by to greet us, and we got to feed them bananas (they even had two petite teenage monkeys).
After 24 hours of flight, we just went on an evening stroll for local food and Caipirinhas (a drink made from limes, cachaca, rum, and ice); we had one traditional and one with passionfruit. Then came a bean stew with rice, collard greens, fried Patels, and Bolinhos.
- Pastels: fried dumplings with fillings of Chicken, beef, sausages, scarlet eggplant, and four other flavors we had a hard time placing.
- Bolinhos: Breaded and fried: scarlet eggplant with sausage, chicken with okra, and link with cheese
- Feijoada: Bean stew with pork, rice, bread crumbles, and collard greens.
Christ the Redeemer
We had breakfast and sat for 2 hours, just enjoying ourselves. They even filled my coffee cup, so it was never empty. Afterward, it was a stroll by the waterfront to see Christ the Redeemer. We got to try a Brazilian Barbeque, with waiters coming by every time your coaster was turned on green (which we couldn’t help but always have) SO Good!
It was all about museums.
The rain came to Rio. If you ever are there, take advantage of the museums, they are spectacular, and the historian museum was free! The science museum was more of an art expedition with its display of rainforests, emotional art displays, and statistics. Where the historian museum is what it is. But neither of us had studied Brazilian history, so we enjoyed learning more about its history. We were a bit out of Rio, and most of the day was spent chilling; however, we got some more Feijoada downtown in a suburban city called Itanhanga that felt more like original brazil than Rio. No one knew English, but our waiter did try.
Itanhanga
Spending a night in Itangna, we had the opportunity get out in the nature. We went on the most beautiful walk to Pedra da Gávea in Barra da Tijuca. Most of it is a climb and worth it with the gorgeous view of the bay of Rio de Janeiro. It was more like a climb than a hike and so fun jumping on roots to get over to the path; it felt like Laura Craft from Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones, with the treasure being a fantastic view. It had its price since I’m still in bed recovering after 30 hours of leg pain.
I look forward to seeing you in Buzios, where the next adventure awaits.
