San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
The Bus drive there was out of this world. Gorgeous! We came across multicolored mountains, oddly shaped peaks, and Finally, Lamas! We were plastered to the window for the first 4 hours, enjoying the scenery. But all good things led to an end cos the bus driver was late, he decided to skip our lunch stop, which led to us running out of real food and water, and we were climbing up a mountain to 4800 elevations. We both got so Hight sick, blue lips and all. So even though it still was gorgeous outside, I was lying down trying to survive. If you’re ever making this trip, not bringing enough food and water is not worth the risk.
We improved during the three days in San Pedro but dealt with a banging headache when moving too abruptly. But it was manageable when just moving slowly and not smiling too wide.
Downtown
The city was made from clay and hay brick. It felt like going into a wild west movie. With the buildings, the old church, and dogs running around everywhere. It was a fantastic city to get used to the altitude. And, of course, to try some Chilean food, we had chicken soup and a Chorilana, which reminded me of a lot of a casserole of left-over meats and potato; it was good even though neither was presentable.
Getting Better
At the Hostel, we took the courage to jump into the icy pool to enjoy the sun’s warmth on their roof deck later, which also had a view over an inactive volcano. Even the breakfast was better with yogurt, scrambled eggs, and some homemade jam. Breakfast is one of my favorite meals!
Here it’s on to Uyuni with an SUV drive through the beautiful nature reserves of Bolivia.
Chao Chao for now.
